The top list

Image
Outlook released its top role models of Indian women. Here is the list... Sania Mirza: May be the greatest of the sensations this year. No need of justification for her selection and no words could explain her excellence... She has taken indian sporting arena to greater heights. A good example for the blend beauty and talent. She is sure to reach greater heights and can inspire numbers. Aruna roy: She worked at the SWRC until 1983, then moved to Devdoondri in 1990 and set up the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathana, a group which is a working example of a transparent organization. She is a strong supporter of the movement for Right to Information, which succeeded in getting the Rajasthan Right to Information Bill passed. She won the Ramon Magsaysay award for Community Leadership in 2000. Ela Bhatt: Ela Bhatt: Check the link wikipedia says more about her.. Preity Zinta: In India if you want to be famous easiest of the paths are politics and cine-field of-course no less of hardwork. When I sa

Fascinating fightback !

Image
Seems I can make whitesheet a cricket blog. Now-a-days cricketing news are filling me. But this fightback of WI is rather fascinating than that. Though the series is lost WI are scripting something. I am sure Australians are out of blue of this man Brian Lara! The third test is nicely poised as Lara has scripted another double and Australians at last are in trouble. Lara I think is a right man in wrong side. If he were an Australian or a burgher he would have surely gone parallel with Don Bradman. Cricinfo says more about his innings of today. The passage reads The performance the Australians had been wary of and the rest of the world had waited for through the Super Series and the first two Tests had finally arrived. The next stop is the Border crossing.

What is the lesson?

I was not a great follower of this guy. To me, the lights of his contemporaries clearly outweighed his' and comparatively they were gifted with better talent. Still he managed to operate headlines and proved capable of big things with his sheer determination. The contemporaries whom I am mentioning are Mohammed Azharuddin (upto 2000), Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid whereas the guy is Sourav Chandidas Ganguly. Cricket happens to be a everday event to almost all youths of modern India and I am no different. We used to chat, cherish, analyze and worship cricket (huh! It has been accepted as a religion by crores of Indians). I am an ardent fan of Mohd.Azharuddin during my school days. His elegance and wrist work are exclusive. When ten cricket lovers meet, it is obvious that atleast five will be Sachin lovers. He deserves that too. I don't wanted to be one among the bunch and so I opted for Azhar. But there came the big talents in mid 90s in the name of Dravid and Ganguly. I cou

Back Again !!

Image
The stage is set like 1996 . 131 and 1 for 5 were the first figures marked against his name. Now it is almost a decade. Going through critical stage of his career, he has retained his position in the test squad. The selectors have said that he has been considered as an allrounder and his inclusion could add more balance to the team. I dunno how far they could justify their words but I am damn sure this would be the final opportunity for the legendary southpaw. NDTV reports that Sourav Chandidas Ganguly is included in Test team and now its (high) time for him to take up the challenge and come up with his pyrotechnics.

Linux Vs Microsoft

Image
Heard a joke this morning.... Seems microsoft is only "micro" soft with its users..... Here is the joke.. Three male programmers were in the bathroom standing at the urinals. The first programmer finishes and walks over to the sink to wash his hands. He then proceeds to dry his hands very carefully. He uses paper towel after paper towel and ensures that every single spot of water on his hands is dried. Turning to the other two, he says, "At Microsoft, we are trained to be extremely thorough."The second programmer finishes his task at the urinal and he proceeds to wash his hands. He uses a single paper towel and makes sure 2that he dries his hands using every available portion of the paper towel: He turns and says, "At Intel not only are we trained to be extremely thorough but we are also trained to be extremely efficient."The third programmer finished and walks straight for the door, shouting over his shoulder: "We Linux programmers don't piss

Got an SMS..

Morning I received a SMS which read ..... "Your brain is a masterpiece. Its divided into two parts. One in the right and another in the left. In the right nothing is left and in the left nothing is right." The person who created this might have thought very well. But I am smart enough to publish it here. Now I am SMSing the link of this post...... :-)

Tsunami: The Killer Wave

Image
We feel tired by working continuously, how long she can work continuously? Whenever she feels tired she just relaxes herself and relaxes her muscles too. She is none other than our earth. When she relaxes her muscles slightly we have to face some devastating situations. One such terrible effect is Tsunami. Here is what wikipedia says about Tsunami... Why have to fear about this killer wave? Pictures speak more than words. The above picture depicts the effects of this killer wave. This wave is really terrible and makes the living across the coastal regions hard. Why a country like India does does not have alert systems? If this is the case then why peninsular countries like India didn't have a Tsunami warning system or an alert system. Might be the complacency speaking its words ! Is that costs relatively higher? We are going to be a developed nation by 2020. Are we going to make a nation developed without providing the basic amenities like protection from natural calami

My Mangal Experience !

Image
If you are an Indian, August on course gets out that patriotic part of from you. If you are from south India and had your upbringing and schooling there, you might have noticed that August is the month of cultural and social competitions given the full fledge to patriotic topics. On the other side if you are from north India you might have flew the tricoloured kites. Overall August stands for memories of historic respectful incidents. This time its bit different for me. Witnessing an epic drama not only lingers entertainmental values but also takes our respect for our historic heroes. Mangal Pandey - the rising was one such experience. The film had expectations to its greatest intensity. Celebrated actor, two years of tireless efforts, greatest of budgets, success of Lagaan and the story of the first revolution against the British rule formed the grounds for the hype created about the film. The film starts with a guerrilla theater by the elephant riders singing "Mangal mangal ho&#

Future of COBOL

COBOL in the eyes of Mr.Steve Gomori.... During my time with the CIS department at Ohio State I have come in Contact with several C/C++/Java/Perl students who will ask why an institution Would continue to teach COBOL . Isn't it being replaced? Isn't it out-dated? Haven't most places already converted to something else? No. No. No. Of course, they look at me like I just fell off of a turnip wagon and Had it back over me before I had a chance to stand back up. They're convinced, for some reason, that this is a dead language. They can offer no justification for this opinion, it just is. Pretty strong conviction for someone who's had no exposure to the industry. Maybe it's just hopeful thinking. There is a simple reason why it isn't being replaced and new development Is not being done in another language. The same reason why existing COBOL systems aren't being rewritten in another language. The reason? There is no alternative to turn to. What about

Pregnancy and workplace discriminations

Image
Yesterday one of my colleagues went on maternity leave. Being one of her team members I could visualize the impact of her absence in our project commitments. In small teams like ours (8 members to be exact including her) each delivery made during her 2-3 month absence would cause an overhead of 2-3 days (huh! sometimes deliveries are highly against each other(!)). If we are having 9 (3 per month) deliveries then it would add to another one month overhead in addition to her leave period. So if she is leaving for three months then as far as we are concerned it is actually a leave period of four months. So for a small scale develping business concern this would be a big concern (Concern concerns (!)). This is why I believe small scale industries are not keen in employing women in mid 20s. On the other hand if they are employing gals in the 20-23 age group the same issue arises but with little postponement. Some time back BBC published an article "pregnant women losing jobs". It

The Secret of 'Doing Without Doing' - Dr. Robert Anthony

Image
The following is an article I took from a weekly newsletter. A very good one... There's a natural cycle of life experience which takes us from the way we are - our identity and system of beliefs - through the actions we take in following up our goals - and ends up with the achievement we are after, what we want to have. So it's Be-Do-Have. If we concentrate only on our goal, what we want to have, the cycle cannot run its course. Asoka has emphasised that the cycle also breaks down if we do not take the necessary actions. Dr Robert Anthony is now going to describe how equally important, and perhaps the first priority, is to create the right mindset, one that genuinely desires to take the actions and to achieve the goal. The Secret of 'Doing Without Doing' - Dr. Robert Anthony One of the mistaken certainties or misconceptions most people operate under is that you get what you want in life by what you DO, or through the actions you take. Most people believe that th

Mega Serials

Image
The manner in which it is presented is worth more than the content of a thing.- Pierre Corneille It has been half a decade now since mega serials have taken the control of our supper hours. The serial named "Rayil Sneham" by K.Balachander in late 80s is the first of such dominative mega serials. These serials binds us closer occupying the whole of our concentration, entertainment and enthusiasm. The greatest of such hits being "Chiththi" by Raadhika. It was said that Chennai's traffic was off by 50% during Chiththi hours. It shows how we have engaged ourselves in serials and the recreational value provided by them. Its heartening to know that 27% of youngsters are also addicted to serials. Husbands started scolding wives on giving such admittance to serials and complained that they are even deprived of their food. But this scenario changed for Chiththi. As the serial crossed 50 episodes, the viewers strength was 40:60 to the women. Gents themselves realized

Blogoshpere

After the bloggo mania hit me, I was searching for options to enhance and popularize this whitesheet but just couldn't get over creeping up assignments and a trip to my hometown. But got some good advises from my friend to pep up things for my blog. So started leaving comments in some blogs which I found on Swahilya's blog. Started the process(!) from Ganesh's (the name certainly has the magic...seems there might be atleast 10 popular "Ganesh" bloggers) and got the reply from him on mine, the first success uhha...! While googling "popular indian blogger", got into Vikramarumilli's blog. Great that many are competing for the popularity. Thanks to Vikram added PageRank extension to my firefox. Bit disappointed to know that my whitesheet is unable to get a rank but my tamil version doing its job with "3". Next measure in "popularizing" is of course as expected is linking to some blogs. The bachelor life with religiousism

Bachelor life as always seen is footloose and fancy-free. Getting the kick out of something is the real motto behind every bachelor. Leading a life of entertainments and enjoying the companionship of fellow comrades fetches the thirst and burst out of you. Often I used to wonder that bachelors (of course spinsters also) are the most happiest of persons in this world. I was a day-scholar in my school and college days and so I was deprived of such brotherly companionship and liberty. Though I have a younger brother, the age difference (7 years) laid definite gap between us thereby adding to my dreams of bachelor life. Now I am into a job about 3000 Km away from my hometown and into that "happiest" (!) bachelor life. Bachelor life adores companionship to maintain the size of wallets and care. But the headcount really matters most of the time. Getting adjusted with diverse personalities all the time is the ultimate thing which no one can even imagine but happens for real i

6 Strength Training Myths Debunked - By Jenna McCarthy

When it comes to lifting weights, everyone has an opinion. One day you hear heaving heavy weights will leave you looking like a linebacker (it won't). The next day, rumor has it that supermodel limbs are a mere 10 minutes away thanks to the Miracle Machine du jour (not in this lifetime). The fact is, those little hand weights aren't the only dumbbells lurking around your gym. If all this conflicting information is enough to make you burn your jog bra and bag working out altogether, fear not: We sought out two of the most in-the-know pros in the fitness industry to clear up your confusion once and for all.   1. If you lift weights, you'll bulk up. "It's physiologically impossible," says Michael Wood, director of the Sports Performance Group in Cambridge, Mass., and an exercise physiologist at Tufts Research Center on Aging. The reason? Testosterone is responsible for a muscle's bulk, and women simply don't have enough of this predominantly

Deep Blue

This was the article published on the IBM website after its Deep Blue beat Gary Kasparov when both of them met for the second time. Gary won the match the year before.   Kasparov began this match with great optimism and won Game 1. However, after discovering that he could have drawn game 2 things seemed to go from bad to worse. He began to wonder if Deep Blue was being tampered with and eventually the machine seemed to totally psych him out. This is what he had to say in a message he sent to members of Club Kasparov:   This was a very tough match, which demanded a lot of my energy. It was also a very interesting match, that captured the imagination of millions of people all over the world. Unfortunately, they also got to see some errors on my part...   I admit that I was probably too optimistic at the start of the match. I followed the conventional wisdom when playing computers of playing 'ugly' openings [non-theoretical] to avoid early confrontation, to acc

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish

This is the prepared text of the address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, who spoke at Commencement on June 12, 2005. I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.   The first story is about connecting the dots. I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out? It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his
