Mega Serials

The manner in which it is presented is worth more than the content of a thing.- Pierre Corneille

It has been half a decade now since mega serials have taken the control of our supper hours. The serial named "Rayil Sneham" by K.Balachander in late 80s is the first of such dominative mega serials. These serials binds us closer occupying the whole of our concentration, entertainment and enthusiasm. The greatest of such hits being "Chiththi" by Raadhika. It was said that Chennai's traffic was off by 50% during Chiththi hours. It shows how we have engaged ourselves in serials and the recreational value provided by them. Its heartening to know that 27% of youngsters are also addicted to serials.

Husbands started scolding wives on giving such admittance to serials and complained that they are even deprived of their food. But this scenario changed for Chiththi. As the serial crossed 50 episodes, the viewers strength was 40:60 to the women. Gents themselves realized the delectation. Now they have accustomed themselves and are used to serials. Why these changes? What is the value behind such attraction?

Once,in early 90s we had only two TV channels, DD and a Srilankan Channel. SUN TV started its telecast in 1994, in the evening hours. Most of SUN TV's earlier programmes are produced by SUN TV itself and had very little audience. At that time DD was in full flow providing programmes like "Oliyum Oliyum", Sunday films, and "Chitrahaar" (I remember only those). But those had only little entertainment value. The amusement people got and their involvement was very meager. SUN TV started realizing this drawback and came up with real good programs which had those expected qualities to back them. They knew the veins of the viewers and are still supplying the appropriate blood. One among their very tactics are teleserials.

Chiththi was a very well planned and executed mega serial of all time. Having realized that no TV channel was hitting the screen in a constant flow and the lack in advertisement, Chiththi emerged itself in full shape. Raadhika should also be given the credit as she is the proprietor of Radaan Television. Its once said in arattai arangam that if u have marketing skills, u can drive people even to Hell so why not to Heaven(!). Chiththi had the content and was marketed nicely which was the backbone of its huge success. It hit the landmark of getting the highest audience and was rated even in BBC's entertainment list. The twists, thrill and characterization drew viewers and at one stage it was said that each voter of tamilnadu have witnessed Chiththi atleast once and 60% of the voters viewing daily.

Now its the era of some upcoming directors and their great characterization. Though "Manaivi" CJBaskar has some hits to his name, "Metti Oli" Thirumurugan and "Kolangal" Thiruselvam are new hotshots. With "Selvi" already accumulating TRP points in quick succession SUN TV's serials' world is almost in its monopoly. Starting from the Big KB popular cine directors like Vasanth are also entering into tele serials. Though I don't have patience to view all those sorrows and jokes I think I can give it a try :-).

Its no bad to say that DD's dramas have dramatically changed to SUN TV's serials because the manner in which it is presented is worth more than the content of a thing.
