What is the lesson?

I was not a great follower of this guy. To me, the lights of his contemporaries clearly outweighed his' and comparatively they were gifted with better talent. Still he managed to operate headlines and proved capable of big things with his sheer determination. The contemporaries whom I am mentioning are Mohammed Azharuddin (upto 2000), Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid whereas the guy is Sourav Chandidas Ganguly.

Cricket happens to be a everday event to almost all youths of modern India and I am no different. We used to chat, cherish, analyze and worship cricket (huh! It has been accepted as a religion by crores of Indians). I am an ardent fan of Mohd.Azharuddin during my school days. His elegance and wrist work are exclusive. When ten cricket lovers meet, it is obvious that atleast five will be Sachin lovers. He deserves that too. I don't wanted to be one among the bunch and so I opted for Azhar. But there came the big talents in mid 90s in the name of Dravid and Ganguly. I could remember that in earlier stages of ODI career Dravid was very shaky and could hardly get big scores. I think Vikram Rathore made his debut in the same game as Dravid did and Vikram scored a half century. But the selectors persisted with Dravid and he responded well.

Test debut for Dravid was with Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly outperformed Dravid scoring a century in that game but Dravid also made his innings count with a beautiful 95. Thereafter the two giants made their mark in the international arena. Sachin, Dravid & Ganguly trio had huge impact in international cricket. Dravid got the technique, concentration and patience much needed for test cricket whereas Ganguly enjoyed the timing and guts needed for ODIs. Both understood their strengths very well and started to gleam in their respective versions of the game.

Sometime after Dravid was dropped in the shorter version for his poor strike rate. But as he is technically sound and a brilliant learner, he bounced back with required abilities. Thereafter he started dictating terms in both forms. Ganguly meanwhile got himself into greater heights scoring 7000 odd ODI runs and enjoyed the privilege of captaining Indian team. With gutsy players around, the team under Ganguly performed very well. In his earlier games as captain, Ganguly was very dedicated and very determined. As days passed as captain, his performance declined but Dravid, Tendulkar and some youngsters like Yuvraj, Kaif started shining. So the performance declination of Ganguly was not that much visible.

Today that declination has reached the root and everyone started to blame the lefty. Now he lost his designation and place in the team for ODI in which he dominated others once. Overall the reputation he earned with his hardwork, guts and determination is lost. Some of his late activities like missing the practice sessions and opting out in the name of injury should be punished. But this punishment should correct him and should not cost him. I believe if he has atleast 25% of determination once he had during his early stages as a cricketer, he will bounce back.

Heard that he is working out for 3 hours in a gym and net practicing in wee hours. As Greg says so often the process has started and so soon he will be back. In the end, what is the lesson?. "Pay enough attention to get away with complacency that too when you are enjoying high posts". Here is an example Sourav Ganguly.
